Many deaths have been attributed to heart attack, which occurs when flood flow to the heart ceases completely or reduces due to blockage.
The blockage of the blood flow channels to the heart could be caused by fat, cholesterol and other substances’ buildup, called plaques, in the coronary arteries.
Excess fat and cholesterol usually causes rupture, which leads to clot that eventually blocks blood flow to the heart.
To avoid heart hearts, doctors have recommended the following, among others:
1. Regularly exercises: Engage in moderate-intensity exercises, such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming, for at least 30 minutes a day.
2. Healthy diet: Focus on consuming fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats, like the Mediterranean diet.
3. Healthy weight: Aim for a body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 24.9.
4. Stress management: Practice stress-reducing techniques, such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises.
5. Sleeping enough: Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep per night.
6. Monitor and manage blood pressure: Keep your blood pressure below 120/80 mmHg.
7. Control cholesterol levels: Keep your LDL (bad) cholesterol below 100 mg/dL.
8. Manage diabetes: If you have diabetes, keep your blood sugar levels under control.
9. Don’t smoke: Quit smoking, as it’s a significant risk factor for heart disease.
10. Reduce or quit alcohol consumption: Drink in moderation (up to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men).
11. Get regular check-ups: Visit your doctor regularly to monitor your heart health.
12. Know your family history: If you have a family history of heart disease, take extra precautions.
13. Be hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
14. Avoid excessive salt intake: Limit your salt intake to less than 2,300 mg per day.
15. Get enough potassium: Include potassium-rich foods, like bananas and leafy greens, in your diet.
