Mr. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has committed to finishing the long-delayed Karshi to Apo Road construction within the next six to seven months. Wike made this pledge on Tuesday during a site visit to assess the 13-kilometre project, which was originally awarded in 2011.
The minister revealed that over 86 percent of the contract sum for the project has already been paid, yet it remains incomplete after 13 years. He attributed the delay to political interference, stating, “It is very unfortunate that this road has been neglected for 13 years. Politics has hindered development and delayed progress.”
Wike expressed his resolve to prioritize the project under the current administration’s renewed hope agenda, declaring, “I will treat this road as a personal project and ensure its completion.”
Regarding the road connecting Karshi to Ara in Nasarawa State, Wike clarified that funding would only be considered if the project is managed as a joint venture, emphasizing that interstate roads fall under the Federal Government’s purview, not the FCT’s.
“I will not use FCT resources for an interstate road. Our focus will be on the Karshi to Apo Road, which is critical to the FCT,” he said.
The minister also raised concerns about the contractor’s capacity to handle the project, warning that there would be strict oversight moving forward. “The contractor must demonstrate their capability. We expect to see equipment on site in the coming weeks before any further funds are released. The contractor will be required to sign an agreement to complete the project within the stipulated timeframe.”
Wike confirmed that the project would maintain its single-lane design for now, with potential future expansion to a dual carriageway if the area develops. He urged affected communities to be patient, assuring them that President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda will ultimately benefit them.
