The Federal Government on Tuesday directed the indefinite closure of the Federal College of Education (Technical) Akoka after Monday’s violent protest. Students of the institution were given until 3:00 pm today (Tuesday) to vacate the campus.
Pathwaynews learned that the government’s decision was conveyed to the Chairman of the Governing Council, Mr. Olatunde Adeniyi, by the Minister of Education.
On Monday, students of FCET Akoka went on a rampage, destroying cars and other property after armed policemen stormed the college and arrested staff and union leaders. Last week, the students sealed the office of the college Provost, Dr. Ademola Azeez, and took their protest to the main road.
In June 2024, the Students’ Parliament impeached their President for writing a letter to the Minister of Education accusing workers of disrupting academic activities without the approval of the student executives. They joined the protesting staff unions in demanding the sack of Dr. Azeez and his exclusion from any governing council meeting.
When Pathway News visited the college in the morning, many students were seen leaving the campus with their bags and other belongings.
