The federal government has commenced an investigation into the alleged deaths at the Calabar Custodial Centre in Cross River State.
The investigation follows a directive by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo who ordered an investigation into the feeding conditions of inmates at the Centre.
Some days ago, a viral video alleged that inmates at the custodial centre were being subjected to inhuman treatment and poor feeding which lead to deaths.
Effanga Etim, the Public Relations Officer of the Calabar Custodial Centre confirmed the commencement of investigation into the incident at the Centre in a brief interview in Calabar.
He said the investigation team is already on ground and the state command will not say much pending the outcome of the investigation.
“The investigation team is already here and carrying out their assignment.
“I cannot speak on anything g until after their report, it is the strength of the report that will enable us to speak.
“The investigation is ongoing and we will only make a formal reaction after”, he said.
The Calabar Custodial Centre was established in 1890 and is one of the oldest custodial centres in Nigeria.
As at last year, it was reported to have 573 inmates, with 67 of these on Death Row.
