The Nigerian Army has announced the commencement of an investigation into an incident involving a soldier who allegedly killed a policeman during an altercation over a traffic violation.
A statement from the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army in Lagos, issued by its spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, confirmed that the incident, currently under investigation, escalated and resulted in the death of the police officer. The soldier involved has been apprehended and handed over to the Military Police for further investigation and disciplinary action.
The 81 Division described the incident as highly regrettable, reaffirming its adherence to the Nigerian Army’s Code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement. The Army emphasized its continuous efforts to educate personnel against actions that could harm its reputation or damage trust with other security agencies and the civilian population.
The General Officer Commanding the 81 Division extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer and the Nigeria Police, assuring the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted and appropriate measures would be taken to ensure justice is served.
The Division also reiterated its commitment to collaborating with other security agencies to safeguard lives and property, in line with its constitutional mandate.
