The Federal Government has announced plans to construct a dam at Dura in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State to control the overflow of water from River Katsina Ala. This was revealed by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Terlumun Utsev, following an assessment of recent flood damage along the Makurdi-Katsina Ala highway, particularly in the Ugbema area.
Represented by Robert Umezulike, Deputy Director of Hydrology at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, the minister confirmed that a contract for the dam’s design has already been awarded. He attributed the flooding to climate change but assured that the government is committed to addressing the problem.
Chief Mathias Ager, the District Head of Mbaakura, one of the flood-affected communities, urged the Federal Government to ensure the dam project becomes a reality to end the recurring floods. He expressed gratitude to Minister Utsev for his proactive efforts in addressing the issue.

Emmanuel Akaakase, a driver who frequently travels the route and was recently trapped by floodwaters, also called for the swift completion of the ongoing rehabilitation of the Makurdi-Gboko-Ugbema-Katsina Ala road. He thanked President Bola Tinubu, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume, and Minister Utsev for their concern for the people of Benue
The visit sparked celebrations in the local community, with many residents praising President Tinubu for his prompt response to their challenges. Heavy rains in Benue have recently caused severe flooding, cutting off the highway between Dura and Abakwa, leaving motorists stranded.
