The Nigerian Mixed Martial Arts Federation (NMMAF) has announced plans to host an International Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event aimed at fostering peace and unity within the country.
Ebere Benard, the Youth Director of NMMAF, emphasized that the event seeks to promote peace and ensure the safety of lives and property through the platform of sports, dialogue, and entertainment.
Scheduled to take place at the Mo Arena in Abuja, the event will feature 16 professional martial artists competing in eight intense bouts on Saturday. Benard, also the CEO of Akalaka Spirit of the Warrior, an MMA Organization and sponsor of the event, revealed that the Abuja MMA Fight Night, dubbed “The Battle of Paikokun Mountain,” draws inspiration from one of the prominent mountains in the FCT.
Reflecting on recent national challenges, Benard highlighted the significance of conveying a positive message amidst adversities. The event aims to evoke the spirit of peace symbolized by the historic Paikokun Mountain, known for providing refuge to the region’s early settlers.
In a bid to engage the public and amplify the message of unity, a hiking exercise involving over 500 participants was organized as a prelude to the event. Benard expressed gratitude to the hiking groups in the FCT and acknowledged the support of law enforcement agencies, with the Inspector General of Police and AIG Zone 7 set to grace the event.
The Ministry of Sports has been instrumental in supporting NMMAF’s initiatives, with MMA gaining recognition as a Federation last year. The sport also made an impression at the African Games in Ghana, showcasing Nigeria’s prowess in MMA.
Agamaye Rowland, President of Apex Fighting Championship (AFC) and event consultant, emphasized inclusivity by ensuring equal pay for female fighters, coinciding with March’s celebration of women internationally.
Chuma Mencity, the Public Relations consultant, revealed that the event would feature international matchups, further establishing Nigeria as a dominant force in African MMA.
Noteworthy matchups include Nigeria’s Vincent Ebenezer, known as “the Iron Fist,” facing Octave Ayinde of Cameroon, and Nigeria’s Yahaya Yahuza squaring off against Christopher Molly of DR Congo.
The event promises to be a significant platform for promoting peace, unity, and Nigeria’s prowess in MMA on the African continent.
