A Federal High Court in Kaduna State has postponed hearing former governor Nasir El-Rufai’s case against the State House of Assembly and the Attorney General of the State to July 17th.
El-Rufai is contesting a House committee’s report accusing him of misappropriating N423 billion during his eight-year tenure.
At the start of Monday’s proceedings, counsel for the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Sani Katu, SAN, informed the court of their intention to file a preliminary objection challenging the court’s jurisdiction.
The counsel requested more time to complete their applications concerning the case brought against his client by El-Rufai, a plea also supported by Kaduna State’s Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General, Sule Shauaibu, SAN, who is also a defendant.
El-Rufai’s counsel, Sule Umoru, did not oppose the extension request.
After hearing submissions from all sides, Justice R.M Aikawa adjourned the case to July 17th, 2024, to allow the respondents to finalize their applications, including the substantive one.
On June 26th, El-Rufai filed the case at the Federal High Court in Kaduna, seeking to invalidate the Kaduna State House of Assembly’s probe report that implicated him in corruption allegations. He argued that the report violated his constitutional right to a fair hearing, claiming he was not given an opportunity to defend himself against the allegations.
