The Anambra Police Command has arrested 200 suspected criminals and made significant recoveries over the past two months, according to Commissioner Mr. Nnaghe Itam. Among the arrests were suspected kidnappers, cultists, car snatchers, and petty thieves. During this period, the command’s operatives also recovered about 1,644 rounds of ammunition.
“I am putting in place operational strategies to ensure that within 10 minutes after a crime is reported, a response team will storm the scene,” Itam said. He credited Gov. Chukwuma Soludo for his support, as well as sister security agencies including the State Security Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and local vigilant groups for their cooperation.
Itam urged residents to provide information that would aid in the fight against crime and mentioned his engagement with key stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious bodies, and community leaders. He also called on traditional rulers to redefine any cultural practices that encroach on fundamental human rights to prevent social clashes.
Warning against land grabbing, voodoo practices, cultism, violence, or abuse of personal freedoms, Itam advised those seeking to threaten the state’s peace to reconsider, stating that their illegitimate actions would be firmly resisted by the police command.
Pathwaynews reported that among those paraded were 60-year-old Dominic Iyetu from Okija in Ihiala Local Government and his son, Chinedu, 25. The pair are accused of stealing a Lexus 300 jeep, which the father claimed was a gift from his son. Iyetu, a bicycle repairer and seller, stated that he believed his son had made money from other sources, such as betting, when he received the jeep.
