The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has reiterated its commitment to improving service delivery across the nation’s Local Government Areas (LGAs) following its 49th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.
In a communique signed by Hon Bala Usman Chamoo, National Publicity Secretary, and Hon Gazal Babatunde, National Treasurer, and sent to reporters on Wednesday, ALGON detailed the outcomes of the meeting held at Reiz Continental Hotel, Abuja, on August 26, 2024. The meeting resulted in several key resolutions aimed at advancing local governance in the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent judgment on local government autonomy.
The NEC expressed its appreciation for the extensive multi-stakeholder engagements that have taken place since the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling on July 11, 2024. These engagements have significantly enhanced the capacity of LGA administrations to navigate the new legal landscape.
“We are deeply grateful for the support and collaboration we’ve received, which has been instrumental in addressing the challenges posed by the Supreme Court’s judgment,” the NEC stated.
Amid rising public expectations, ALGON reaffirmed its determination to meet the needs of the communities it serves. “Our commitment to delivering tangible successes in service delivery is stronger than ever,” the NEC emphasized, noting the critical role local governments play in the daily lives of Nigerians.
To strengthen local governance, the NEC highlighted ongoing high-level advocacy and partnerships with key federal ministries and agencies. Notable engagements have occurred with the Federal Ministries of Health, Education, Finance, Budget and Planning, and Petroleum Resources, among others. These efforts, according to the NEC, are crucial for fostering a robust local government administration that aligns with national development goals.
The NEC also welcomed the inauguration of the Federal Government Steering Committee on the enforcement of the Supreme Court judgment. The committee, tasked with overseeing the implementation of local government financial autonomy, has received ALGON’s full support.
“We are committed to ensuring that the autonomy gains are fully realized and that the local government structure is reviewed to better meet the people’s needs,” the NEC stated.
On the health front, ALGON is focused on completing Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) projects across the country. The NEC resolved to invite the project consultant for a briefing to expedite the completion of these critical healthcare facilities.
In a move to enhance accountability and transparency, ALGON announced its partnership with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The collaboration will focus on orienting ALGON members on best practices in procurement, financial management, and adherence to due process.
“This partnership with the EFCC is a testament to our commitment to transparency and accountability in all aspects of local government administration,” the NEC noted.
ALGON’s leadership expressed confidence that these resolutions will significantly contribute to the advancement of local government councils and the betterment of service delivery to the Nigerian populace.
