The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of orchestrating attacks on its members under the guise of peaceful protests. The allegations were made by the State APC Publicity Secretary, Malam Yusuf Idris, during a press briefing in Gusau on Friday.
Idris claimed that the PDP leadership in the state had incited protesters to attack the residence of former Governor and current Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle. He also alleged that PDP thugs targeted the home of Senator Sahabi Ya’u in Kaura Namoda, causing significant damage, including the destruction of a Toyota Hilux van.
“We had anticipated the possibility of these protests being hijacked by hoodlums and miscreants,” Idris stated, commending security agencies for their swift intervention and urging them to arrest those responsible.
The APC expressed concern over what it described as the troubling direction of nationwide protests, noting that PDP thugs seemed strategically deployed to harm APC members and destroy property. Idris called on Governor Dauda Lawal to rein in PDP members to maintain peace in the state.
In response, the acting State PDP Chairman, Alhaji Mukhtar Lugga, dismissed the allegations as baseless and unfortunate. Lugga, who also serves as Chief of Staff to Governor Lawal, criticized the APC for politicizing issues related to hunger, bad governance, and the development of the state. He emphasized that the PDP remains committed to peace and focused on governance under Lawal’s administration.
