The All Progressives Congress (APC) has rebuffed accusations from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) regarding the country’s economic decline, stating that the PDP lacks the moral authority to make such claims.
In a statement released on Thursday in Abuja, APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, responded to remarks made by PDP governors at their meeting on July 17 in Enugu. The governors had criticized the APC-led government for allegedly ruining the country’s economy.
Morka highlighted that the PDP governors’ meeting was convened in light of the recent Supreme Court ruling, which granted financial autonomy to Local Government Councils—a move he praised as a significant democratic milestone since 1999. He expressed disappointment over the PDP governors’ comments.
“It is a sad irony that PDP Governors, who congregated to discuss the newly won financial autonomy of local governments, ended their meeting pointing political accusing fingers at the APC government that accomplished a reform that the PDP did not,” Morka stated. He further criticized the PDP’s 16-year governance, claiming they neither initiated nor delivered such reforms.
Morka accused the PDP governors of misunderstanding their responsibilities as state leaders and failing to utilize the resources available to them effectively. He noted their tendency to blame the Federal Government for their shortcomings, including their failure to deliver basic services to their constituents.
Citing Delta state, which has been under PDP governance since 1999 and is the highest recipient of federal allocations, Morka pointed out that many PDP governors have not even paid the legal minimum wage to their workers. He highlighted their recent public statements about their inability to meet the proposed new minimum wage requirements.
“The PDP, in its 16 years in government, built nothing that could be remembered or destroyed. The APC-led administration has only saddled itself with fixing the mess it created,” Morka said. He also noted that the current administration, through the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is completing numerous road projects in the FCT that were initiated but abandoned by previous PDP administrations.
Morka concluded by asserting that the reforms of President Tinubu’s APC-administration would bring enduring prosperity to Nigerians, despite the transient hardships caused by necessary corrective policies.
