The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State has officially announced its candidates for the upcoming local government elections, set for November 2, 2024. The unveiling took place late Friday at the APC Secretariat in Lafia, led by the chairman of the party’s primaries election committee, Mr. Tanimu Adabson.
Adabson revealed that the candidates were selected through a consensus approach, in accordance with the party’s constitution, which permits direct, indirect, or consensus primaries. Extensive consultations with party stakeholders across the state’s 13 local government areas (LGAs) helped identify the most credible and capable candidates.
“We aimed to choose candidates who are competent and capable of delivering the dividends of democracy,” said Adabson. “The governor was keen on selecting experienced individuals who are dedicated to public service, especially in light of the recent financial autonomy granted to local governments.”
The selection process was stringent, with candidates undergoing screening to ensure they met constitutional requirements, and those who did not were disqualified. Additionally, Adabson highlighted efforts to promote inclusivity by offering a 50% reduction in nomination fees for female and disabled aspirants, ensuring diverse representation in the elections.
The APC also finalized a list of 147 councilor candidates, which will be submitted to the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) as part of the election timetable.
Adabson expressed confidence that the process would lead to a peaceful and credible election, thanking stakeholders for their support and commitment.
Dr. Aliyu Bello, APC Chairman in Nasarawa State, commended the primaries committee for their dedication, noting the sacrifices made to ensure a transparent process. Bello also addressed concerns over a false list circulating on social media, urging the media to verify information with the party before publication.
