APM Terminals Apapa has started recycling its discarded tyres into flip-flops, as announced in a statement to the press yesterday. This initiative is part of their celebration of “Go Green,” a global APM Terminals awareness campaign aimed at promoting sustainable business practices and minimizing environmental impact. The theme of this year’s campaign is “Nothing Goes to Waste.”
Terminal Manager Steen Knudsen highlighted the company’s commitment to continuous improvement and sustainable repurposing of waste. “We are in partnership with various government-licensed environmental organizations to reduce not just our plastic footprint but also other forms of waste like discarded boiler suits and lubricants. Recently, we’ve started producing flip-flops from discarded tyres in collaboration with one of our environmental partners,” said Knudsen. Each pair of these eco-friendly flip-flops is made from 70% recycled tyres from truck and crane equipment, saving a minimum of 7.5 kg of CO2 emissions per pair, thus helping to reduce waste and combat climate change.
As part of the Go Green campaign, APM Terminals Apapa also held an awareness session for its employees on the importance of incorporating sustainable business practices into the terminal’s operations. This session was conducted in collaboration with Kevron Consulting Limited, a provider of Health Safety and Environmental services.
Felix Chinwe Ugwuagbo, HSE Manager at APM Terminals Apapa, emphasized the importance of involving employees in the sustainability journey, encouraging them to bring the message of sustainability and waste recycling to their homes and communities. “We are already doing a lot to reduce waste at the terminal, but we want our employees to come up with ideas and think about what they can do individually to reduce waste. This requires a collaborative effort from society,” he said.
Dare Ayodele, Head of Environmental Management System (EMS) Consultancy and Services at Kevron Consulting, described waste management as beneficial not only for the environment but also for business and communities. “Going green is about efficient resource usage. Traditional waste management strains resources and pollutes our oceans, while innovative solutions ensure nothing goes to waste, saving costs and showcasing our commitment to environmental responsibility, attracting environmentally conscious consumers and investors,” Ayodele added.
