The Court of Appeal dealt a blow to Rivers local government chairmen aligned with former governor Nyesom Wike, rejecting two appeals filed by ex-chairmen.
Appeals numbered CA/PH/137M/2024 and CA/PH/145M/2024, filed by Hon. Enyiada Cookey-Gam and six others, were dismissed for lack of merit.
The former chairmen contested the decisions of the high court concerning the extension of their tenure.
Earlier this year, a Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt invalidated the tenure extension for chairmen of the state’s 23 local government areas. The ruling, issued on Tuesday, May 21, nullified the Local Government Law No.2 of 2024, which had prolonged the chairmen’s tenure by six months beyond its expiration.
