The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the deaths of three construction workers after a building collapsed at Arowojobe Estate in Maryland, Lagos. The agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, released a statement on Thursday verifying the incident, which occurred at No. 13, Wilson Mba Street, Arowojobe Estate.
According to Oke-Osanyintolu, the distress call regarding the collapsed building was received at approximately 3:49 a.m., prompting an immediate response. By 3:58 a.m., LASEMA’s team was on-site. The collapsed structure was a set of three terraces under construction.
The rescue operations led to the recovery of three deceased adult males, while two other male adults were rescued alive. Additionally, one man trapped under the rubble was also successfully rescued and treated on-site.
The rescue efforts were a collaborative operation involving LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire Service, and the Nigeria Police. LASEMA’s excavator was deployed to expedite the search and rescue operations. The State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit has been contacted to handle the remains of the deceased. All six men involved in the incident were site workers.
