President Bola Tinubu announced the creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development on Tuesday, with a new minister for the ministry to be named soon. The announcement was made during the inauguration of the Presidential Committee on Livestock Reforms.
Last September, President Tinubu approved the establishment of the Presidential Committee to Address Herders/Farmers Clashes and Bolster the Livestock & Dairy Industries. This committee is dedicated to reforming the livestock industry and providing long-term solutions to the recurring clashes between herders and farmers in the country.
The establishment of the committee followed the submission of a report from the National Conference on Livestock Reforms and Mitigation of Associated Conflicts in Nigeria. The conference was convened by the former Governor of Kano State and Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje.
The committee is expected to collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and propose recommendations aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence between herders and farmers, while ensuring the security and economic well-being of all Nigerians.
