The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced that it will initiate an indefinite nationwide strike starting at midnight if any harm comes to its President, Joe Ajaero, or other leaders. This decision comes in response to an invitation from the Nigerian Police Force for Ajaero to answer questions regarding allegations of terrorism financing, cybercrime, and treason.
In a statement released following an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, the NLC condemned the allegations as politically motivated and an attempt to undermine the Congress’s role. The communiqué, signed by Deputy President Ado Sani Minjibir, criticized the police’s actions as a continuation of harassment against the Congress and its members.
The NLC stated that while it will honor the police invitation, it demands an extension due to the serious nature of the allegations. The Congress strongly denounced the ongoing intimidation as a blatant attempt to stifle the voice of the working people and their leadership, violating constitutional rights and International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions.

The NEC warned the state to cease its alleged witch-hunt against the Congress’s leadership and declared that the Congress would not tolerate further infringement on its members’ rights. It directed all affiliates and state councils to mobilize their members for mass protests and industrial actions if any harm comes to Ajaero or other leaders.
The communiqué called on civil society allies and the general public to support the NLC in its fight against perceived injustice and oppression, urging all Nigerians to defend democratic values.
