A two-story building under construction, housing shops in Eke Amawbia, Anambra State, has collapsed, resulting in multiple fatalities and numerous individuals trapped in the rubble.
The devastating collapse occurred around 12 noon on Thursday, sending shockwaves through the local community and causing panic among traders and residents.
Eyewitnesses reported that the building, which housed several vegetable traders, suddenly crumbled, burying many beneath the debris. As of press time, one person has been rescued and taken to Amawbia Maternity Home for urgent medical attention, but many more are still believed to be trapped inside the wreckage.
A large contingent of police officers arrived at the scene to coordinate rescue efforts and maintain order. Various rescue teams are working tirelessly to salvage the situation.
Traders who witnessed the collapse blamed substandard engineering work, alleging that the building’s structural integrity had been compromised.

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident. In response to a distress call about the building collapse at Ekeoyibo market, the command cordoned off the scene and rescued two victims who have been taken to the hospital for medical care.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga stated, “On the directives of the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations led operatives at the scene for an on-the-spot assessment. The area has been cordoned off and rescue operations are still ongoing.”
