The national leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) extends warm greetings to all Christian faithful as Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten season.
In a statement released on Wednesday, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, emphasized the significance of Ash Wednesday and the Lenten season as an opportune time for self-reflection, repentance, and spiritual growth. He highlighted the importance of embracing qualities such as love and compassion in daily life, following the example of Jesus Christ.
“During this period of self-examination and sacrifice, we are called to contemplate how we can contribute to the well-being of others, as exemplified by Christ. It’s a time to extend a helping hand to those in need and advocate for support from our leaders in easing the burdens faced by our fellow citizens,” Archbishop Okoh stated.
He further emphasized the solemnity of Ash Wednesday, symbolized by the ashes placed on foreheads, serving as a reminder of human mortality and humility. This act prompts believers to reflect on their purpose and the consequences of their actions, seeking forgiveness and restoration from God.
“As we embark on this Lenten journey, our hearts are moved by the struggles of many facing economic hardships in Nigeria. We envision a Nigeria where every individual has the opportunity to thrive, and where leaders prioritize the well-being of the most vulnerable,” Archbishop Okoh added.
He urged leaders at all levels of governance to acknowledge the urgency of economic challenges and take concrete steps to support those facing hardships. Archbishop Okoh called for solidarity and commitment in creating a more inclusive and compassionate society, where the marginalized are supported and heard.
“As we enter this Lenten season, let us embrace empathy and service to others. Together, let us work towards building a Nigeria where compassion and support for our fellow citizens are fundamental values,” Archbishop Okoh concluded.
