The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported that the cholera outbreak has now spread to 31 states, with the death toll from the recent outbreak reaching 54 nationwide.
Dr. Jide Idris, Director General of NCDC, revealed this information during a press conference held in Abuja on Monday. He stated, “As of 24th June 2024, there have been 1,528 suspected cases and 53 deaths recorded across 31 states and 107 LGAs, with a case fatality rate of 3.5% since the beginning of the year.”
Dr. Idris emphasized the human toll of these statistics, noting, “These fatalities are not just statistics but a significant loss of a loved family member, a spouse, a parent, and often a seasoned healthcare worker and team member. This situation might be compounded as the rainy season intensifies.”
