The Anambra Civil Society Network (ACSONet) has called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to establish a clear timeline for the proposed Local Government elections in the state. The appeal was made by the group’s Chairman, Mr. Chris Azor, during an interview with the Pathwaynews in Awka, following the inauguration of the Anambra Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) by the governor.
Azor commended Governor Soludo for setting up the commission, describing it as a positive step towards conducting council polls in Anambra State. On Tuesday, Soludo inaugurated a six-member ANSIEC Board, chaired by Magistrate Chinelo Genevive Osakwe, with members including Mrs. Bernardine Obande, Mr. Osita Igbokwe, Mr. Chinedu Nnalue, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Umeh, and Mr. Emeka Okeke.
Governor Soludo stated that the commission would play a crucial role in organizing and ensuring the smooth, peaceful, and transparent conduct of the local government elections in the state.
Azor expressed the civil society’s excitement about the establishment of the board, noting that the absence of local government elections for over a decade had created a significant gap in democratic practice and development in Anambra.
“We commend Mr. Governor for fulfilling his campaign promise by setting up the Anambra Independent Electoral Commission. It is a promise kept and aligns with our ongoing advocacy for bringing democracy to the grassroots level. Anambra has suffered a worrisome delay in the conduct of local government elections for over 10 years,” Azor said.
