The Government of Cross River has criticized the National Bureau of Statistics’ (NBS) rating of the state on child labour as “spurious” and not reflective of the actual situation. The NBS report ranked Cross River as the number one state in the country for child labour, with 67.4 percent involvement.
The government questioned the parameters used by the NBS for their research.
Ekpang highlighted that Cross River was among the first states to domesticate the Child Rights Law, demonstrating its commitment to child welfare. “The United Nations is aware of what we are doing in this regard. It is preposterous to suggest we have such high levels of child labour, especially considering our ongoing efforts and advocacy.”
