The ongoing examination at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ogun State, was violently interrupted on Wednesday when suspected cultists stormed the campus, dragged out a final-year student, Ahmed Ayinla Fabiyi, and brutally killed him.
Fabiyi, a History and Diplomatic Studies major, was about to take his final exam and celebrate his birthday. According to a reliable source, the attack occurred around 3 pm, just as the exam was about to start.
The assailants, pretending to be friends there to celebrate Fabiyi’s birthday, carried him out of the hall under false pretenses. Another source revealed that the men dragged Fabiyi to a secluded area, shot him, and struck him on the head with a brick, ensuring his death before fleeing the scene.
“They were having their final paper when some boys suspected to be cultists stormed the examination venue and dragged him out. They kicked him, shot at him, and hit him with a brick on the head. It was when they realized he was lifeless that they left before the school security men came to pick him up to the school clinic, where he was confirmed dead,” a witness recounted.
The institution’s Students Union President, Bethel Olorunfunmi, confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that medical efforts to save Fabiyi were unsuccessful. Olorunfunmi expressed condolences to the bereaved family and announced the implementation of strict security measures, including a mandatory curfew starting at 10 pm.
Mrs. Ayotunde Odubela, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, detailed the gang’s attack. Initially perceived as a birthday celebration, the attackers’ true intentions were revealed as they dragged Fabiyi towards a bushy area near the university’s technical workshop and viciously beat and macheted him.
“Everyone thought they were celebrating his birthday until he was dragged to the bushy part of the institution’s technical workshop and attacked,” Odubela said.
Efforts by the school security unit were in vain as Fabiyi succumbed to his injuries before reaching Babcock University Teaching Hospital after being transferred from the General Hospital in Ijebu Ode.
State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the police had launched an investigation and were conducting raids on suspected cultists’ hideouts to apprehend those responsible for the heinous act.
“Our officers immediately moved to the scene of the incident. All possible hideouts of the suspects were combed and raided by our detectives, including those from other divisions in the area. Every effort is being made to ensure that all the perpetrators are apprehended,” Odutola stated.
