The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed claims that an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS) has been appointed within the Armed Forces of Nigeria. This clarification came in a statement issued by Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, Acting Director of Defence Information, on Monday in Abuja.
Gusau emphasized that no such appointment exists, stating that the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, had recently communicated with the current COAS, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who is currently on a well-deserved rest as part of his 2024 annual leave.
He assured that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) remains professionally managed, with all Service Chiefs, including the COAS, diligently performing their duties as outlined by the Nigerian Constitution. Gusau further explained that Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, is merely handling routine briefs in line with standard military procedures during Lagbaja’s leave.
The DHQ urged those spreading unfounded rumors to cease immediately, stating, “The COAS is hale and hearty and will resume his duties soon.” Media outlets were also cautioned to verify information before releasing false reports.
In addition, Gusau issued a stern warning against those advocating for a military takeover, reminding them that such actions are treasonous under the Constitution. He reaffirmed the military’s loyalty to President Bola Tinubu’s administration and its unwavering commitment to upholding democracy and national integrity.

“The relative peace being enjoyed today is a testament to the President’s support for the military and the dedication of the AFN leadership,” Gusau added, stressing that the Armed Forces and relevant security agencies have been directed to take decisive action against any individual or group promoting unconstitutional changes in the country.
He concluded by expressing gratitude to Nigerians for their continued support and prayers, assuring that victory in safeguarding the nation’s democracy is certain.
