The Department of State Services (DSS) has refuted claims of conducting a raid on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) headquarters in Abuja. In a brief statement on the DSS media WhatsApp handle, DSS Director of Public Relations, Peter Afunaya, clarified, “Good morning dear friends. Please kindly note that the Service (DSS) did not carry out any operation at the NLC office in Abuja.”
This denial follows an alarm raised by the NLC, which alleged that its headquarters, known as Labour House, was raided by security personnel around 8:30 p.m. The NLC reported that books and other publications were seized during the operation.
According to Benson Upah, NLC’s Head of Media and Public Relations, the security operatives allegedly ransacked the bookshop on the second floor, claiming they were searching for seditious materials related to the #EndBadGovernance protests.
The NLC condemned the alleged raid, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the security operatives and criticized the incident as a severe breach of democratic norms. “The Nigeria Labour Congress condemns in its entirety this new low in security operations in Nigeria. The armed security operatives showed no legal document permitting them to invade the premises of the Nigeria Labour Congress in the ungodly hours of the night,” the statement read. “Even in the dark days of military rule, NLC secretariats were never invaded and ransacked by security agents. Today is indeed a very sad day for our democracy.”
