The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has rebuked criminal defendant Ismaila Mustapha, better known as Mompha, for calling the anti-graft commission a “useless agency” and accusing its operatives of corruption.
In a statement released on Saturday evening, the EFCC challenged Mompha to substantiate his allegations.
“The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been drawn to the malicious and unsubstantiated statement made by the embattled Ismaila Mustapha, (a.k.a Mompha), alleging corruption by operatives of the Commission.
“The claim, coming from an accused in a criminal trial for conspiracy to launder funds obtained through unlawful activity, retention of proceeds of criminal activities, and failure to disclose assets and property, ought to be ignored as the rantings of a sinking defendant,” the commission stated through its spokesman, Dele Oyewale.
The EFCC emphasized that Mompha’s claims must be addressed as they strike at the core of the commission’s most valued principle—integrity.
