Armed hoodlums caused chaos during the rerun election held in eight polling units within Ward 5 of Enugu South Urban Constituency on Wednesday. While no fatalities were reported, election materials were vandalized, and voters were obstructed from exercising their right to vote. Despite the heavy security presence at the polling stations, the disruption occurred.
Simultaneously, supporters of both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) gathered at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in the state to protest the conduct of the election. PDP loyalists claimed that the result sheets provided by INEC were counterfeit, while LP members accused PDP supporters of deliberately sabotaging the electoral process.
Bright Ngene, the Labour Party candidate, expressed dismay over PDP’s refusal to acknowledge the authenticity of the result sheets, despite INEC’s assurance of their validity. Ngene accused the PDP of attempting to undermine the election, despite INEC’s use of legitimate result sheets.
Sam Ngene, the PDP candidate, countered by alleging that INEC had conducted the election using fraudulent result sheets. As of the time of reporting, INEC has not made a public statement regarding its stance on the election.
