The Pathway News reports that the first cohort of pilot students from Enugu’s Green Smart Schools has graduated. These students include Primary School pupils and Junior Secondary School (JSS) one to three students.
The Green Smart Schools initiative, part of Gov. Peter Mbah’s education transformation plan, integrates technological advancements, human capital development, and environmental sustainability. This innovative project aims to establish schools across the 260 political wards of the state, accommodating pre-primary to junior secondary levels, with the pilot Smart School located in Owo, Nkanu East Council Area.
During the graduation ceremony in Owo, the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, praised the journey as both trailblazing and revolutionary. He highlighted the significant progress made, moving children from traditional mud walls and chalkboards to state-of-the-art smart schools. The students have been trained in sustainable water solutions, mechatronics, Artificial Intelligence, robotics, coding, and 3D printing.
Prof. Mbah described the graduates as the “historic first cohort of Enugu Smart Green School students.” He noted that these students have transitioned from literacy and numeracy deficiencies to designing SDGs-informed solutions to local problems.
“Their self-confidence and pride of achievement is the truest testament to one year of painstaking work to make a dream a reality. It was one year of practice-based research, innovation, experimentation, assessment, evaluation, nimbleness, and many hours of training, professional development, instruction, and learning interventions,” Mbah stated.
The graduation event featured drama presentations and cultural displays by the students, showcasing their newfound skills and talents.
