A few weeks after the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) said it would relocate former President of Sierra Leone, Ernest Koroma, to Nigeria, he arrived Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory on Friday.
Koroma arrived in one of Nigeria’s presidential jets and was received by Nigerian officials.
Before his arrival, the ECOWAS Commission president, Omar Touray, had revealed, in a statement, that arranged had been concluded by the commission for the former president to be allowed to leave Sierra Leone for Nigeria.
Touray said the arrangement was part of the agreement reached with the government of Sierra Leone on December 23, 2023 by ECOWAS delegation led by Ghanaian President, Nana Akufo-Addo, and President of Senegal, Macky Sall.
He confirmed that Koroma accepted the offer.
Koroma, who had been under house arrest, was accused of having a hand in a failed coup attempt in Sierra Leone. He is facing treason charges, which the government said it was willing to drop if he vacated the country.
Recently, a magistrate’s court in Sierra Leone granted Koroma leave to seek medical care in Nigeria.
