In a strong and clear message, the Federal Government of Nigeria has urged the diplomatic community within the country to refrain from interfering in the ongoing nationwide protests. The government has emphasized the importance of respecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and has called for collaborative efforts to address the economic challenges facing the nation.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, made these remarks on Wednesday in Abuja during a briefing with Members of the Diplomatic Corps. The briefing focused on the government’s policies and programs, particularly in light of the recent protests.
Ambassador Tuggar, addressing the aftermath of the protests, underscored that Nigeria operates under the rule of law. He assured that the government is committed to protecting its citizens and maintaining order. He expressed the government’s firm stance against any form of interference, particularly from foreign entities.
“No nation can tolerate foreign interference in its domestic affairs,” Ambassador Tuggar asserted. He warned that the Nigerian government would take appropriate action against any foreign entity residing in Nigeria that is found to have directly or indirectly supported protesters or interfered in the country’s internal affairs.
The minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining cordial relationships with foreign nations and organizations. He emphasized that while Nigeria values these relationships, the government would not hesitate to take necessary actions to safeguard its sovereignty.
“More than at any time before now, we solicit your understanding and collaboration in the ongoing efforts of the government in addressing the economic challenges confronting the country. This collaboration is crucial to achieving a better life for every Nigerian, both at home and abroad,” Tuggar stated.
The minister also reassured the diplomats that President Bola Tinubu is acutely aware of the pain and frustrations driving the protests. He noted that the President had expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and is committed to addressing the concerns of Nigerians.
Ambassador Tuggar reiterated President Tinubu’s appeal to the youth, urging them to refrain from violence and destruction. He reminded the diplomats that President Tinubu had been a leading figure in the campaign against military dictatorship in the 1990s, and he remains deeply committed to Nigeria’s democracy. The rights to freedom of assembly, expression, and dissent are fundamental to this democracy.
“While admitting there have been many dashed hopes in the past, President Tinubu affirmed that Nigeria is in a new era of Renewed Hope,” Tuggar said. He added that the government is working tirelessly to ensure that the results of its efforts will soon be visible and beneficial to all Nigerians.
