The Federal Government has handed over 24,180 bags of 50kg maize and 5,828 bags of 25kg garri to the Akwa Ibom Government for distribution to vulnerable households.
Mrs. Zubaida Umar, Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), made the presentation in Uyo on behalf of the Federal Government. Represented by Mrs. Mmandu Aisueni, Head of NEMA’s Akwa Ibom office, Umar stated that the donation fulfilled President Bola Tinubu’s promise to alleviate the economic hardship facing Nigerians.
This comes after the Federal Government approved the release of 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted food items from the National Strategic Reserve for vulnerable households.
“We are here to hand over the food items to the state government for distribution to the intended beneficiaries in the communities,” Umar said.
She emphasized that the food should be distributed through local government committees, consisting of council chairmen, State Emergency Management Agency representatives, and traditional leaders. She also noted that 20% of the food should go to religious groups, and 3% should be allocated to boarding schools.
Dr. Offiong Offor, Akwa Ibom’s Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, received the items and expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, promising that the state would ensure the food reaches the intended recipients.
