The Federal Government has urged religious leaders across Nigeria to take a stand against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, Gabriel Aduda, made the call during a Special Prayer Session at Living Faith Church in Jahi, as part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against GBV, which aims to raise awareness and promote advocacy for the elimination of violence against women and girls.
Aduda emphasised the significant influence that faith-based organizations hold in shaping societal values and behaviors. “Violence has claimed too many lives and must not be allowed to continue,” he declared. “The life of every individual is sacred, and safeguarding these lives is fundamental to building a happier, more prosperous Nigeria.”
During his address, Aduda referenced biblical scripture, specifically Ezekiel 45:9, which calls for an end to violence and oppression. He urged religious leaders to appeal to the conscience of those who perpetrate violence, stating, “We believe that the Church and the Mosque hold a unique power to reach the hearts of abusers and inspire lasting change.”
The Permanent Secretary also called on men to embrace non-violent means of conflict resolution. “We say no to abuse, and we encourage all men to say no to abuse,” he asserted. “There are many peaceful ways to settle disputes without resorting to violence.”
He described the issue not only as a physical battle but as a spiritual one, asking for divine intervention: “Today, we ask God to touch the hearts of abusers and transform their ways.”
Senior Pastor of Living Faith Church, Pastor Adeniyi Alabi, echoed Aduda’s sentiments during his remarks. He condemned all forms of violence as inhumane and called for proactive measures to address GBV. “It is our duty as religious leaders to stand against violence in all its forms,” Alabi stated.
He commended the Ministry for its unwavering commitment to combating abuse and pledged the continued support of religious leaders in this vital campaign.
As the Ministry intensifies its advocacy efforts during this year’s 16 Days of Activism, it reiterates that violence is never the answer and that every life matters.
