Emphasizing the pivotal role of the nation’s youth in shaping its future, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, underscored the government’s responsibility to cultivate an ecosystem conducive to their growth and innovation through the utilization of Science, Technology, and Innovation.
Nnaji highlighted Nigeria’s wealth in human capital, particularly among its youth population, which comprises tens of millions of talented individuals dedicated to driving the country’s economic advancement.
Speaking at the 2024 edition of the 774 Young Nigerian Scientists Presidential Award (774-YONSPA) held in Abuja, Nnaji, represented by Ministry Permanent Secretary Mrs. Esuabana Nko-Asanye, reiterated the significance of initiatives like 774-YONSPA. This program, initiated by the Ministry, aims to inspire students to pursue science subjects and careers in STEM fields, aligning with the Ministry’s strategy of nurturing young Nigerians in science from an early age.
Furthermore, Nnaji emphasized the critical role of science in various facets of human life, highlighting its potential to elevate living standards and drive economic growth and development.
During the event, Nnaji announced that cash prizes and presidential commendations would be awarded to the top performers at the forthcoming “Techno Expo” scheduled from March 11th to 15th, 2024, in Abuja.
The results of the National Final Examination for 774-YONSPA, held in Abuja, were revealed, with Abdul Rahman Fadlullahi from Lagos State securing the first position. Atigah Oluwaferanmi from Ogun State and Janelle Udeme Akpan from the Federal Capital Territory clinched second positions overall.
Earlier, Mrs. Esuabana Nko-Asanye, the Permanent Secretary, emphasized the program’s aim to stimulate interest in STEM education among youths across all levels of government. She stressed the necessity of innovation, science, and technology for national progress, urging youths to excel in their chosen fields to bolster Nigeria’s global recognition in the scientific arena.
Professor Uno-Uno, Chief Examiner of the Program, commended students for their exceptional performance and encouraged teachers to prioritize applied science education, equipping students with the necessary tools to comprehend complex subjects effectively.
