The Osun State Fire Service confirmed on Friday that five people lost their lives in an accident that occurred on Thursday in Ile-Ife.
According to a statement released by the Director of Osun State Fire Service, Engr. Ismail Olaniyi, through the Head of Publicity and Public Enlightenment, Mr. Adekunle Ibraheem, a gas tanker collided with a commercial bus, locally known as “Sabo-Lagere,” which was carrying an unspecified number of passengers. The accident happened as both vehicles swerved off the road and into a ditch along the Ibadan Express Road in the Ajebandele area of Ile-Ife.
After intensive efforts by the State Fire Service, alongside the FRSC Ile-Ife Zonal Command led by SRC Kenny Olorundare and local residents, five victims were retrieved from the wreckage. The victims included two men, two women, and a toddler, and their bodies were transported to the morgue at OAU Teaching Hospital.
The incident was described as both tragic and avoidable.
