A one-time acting president of the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) and former president of the Confederation of African Football, Issa Hayatou, is dead.
Hayatou, a track athlete and basketball player in his youth and an outstanding football administrator from Cameroonian, died at the age of 78.
The football manager headed CAF for 29 years before joining FIFA, where he was acting president for four months when the world’s football body’s then president, Sepp Blatter, was suspended from office.
In his tribute to Hayatou on Instagram, FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, wrote: “Saddened to hear of the passing of former CAF president, former FIFA president ad interim, FIFA vice president and FIFA council member, Issa Hayatou.
“A passionate sports fan, he dedicated his life to sports administration.
“On behalf of FIFA, my condolences go to his family, friends, former colleagues and all who knew him. Rest in peace.”
