The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Delta Command, disclosed on Wednesday that a total of 4,651 permanent drivers’ licences are yet to be collected in the state. According to Mr. Muftau Irekeola, the Sector Commander, this information was shared with pathwaynews in Asaba.
As of December 2023, there were 3,953 uncollected drivers’ licences, and since the beginning of 2024, approximately 23,513 licences have been produced. However, only 18,962 permanent drivers’ licences have been collected so far this year.
Irekeola expressed concern over motorists who fail to collect their processed drivers’ licences, despite efforts by licence centre staff to notify them through their next of kin. He noted that some drivers become complacent with temporary licences, while others simply do not prioritize picking up their permanent licences amidst busy schedules.
Emphasizing the importance of possessing a valid driver’s licence, Irekeola warned that driving without one not only endangers lives but also constitutes a serious traffic offense. He highlighted that possession of a valid licence was mandatory for driving in the country, and drivers caught without one could face severe legal consequences.
The Sector Commander announced plans for a collaboration between FRSC and the Board of Internal Revenue on an upcoming “Operation Show Your Licence” initiative in Asaba. This operation aims to crack down on drivers operating vehicles without valid licences, promoting road safety and adherence to traffic regulations.
