Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has directed the state auditor general to commence auditing the financial records of the state’s 23 Local Government Areas over the past three years. This directive was issued as he swore in the Caretaker Committee Chairmen for the Local Government Areas.
Governor Fubara explained that the audit aims to provide oversight over the new authorities and ensure transparency. He urged the caretaker chairmen to prioritize the interests of their constituents and demonstrate that their selection was based on merit rather than seeing themselves as superheroes.
Highlighting the importance of democracy in current events, Governor Fubara addressed concerns over tenure extensions, stating that this issue not only affects Rivers State but also has implications nationwide. He justified the use of caretaker committees, citing their prevalence across many states in the country.
However, Governor Fubara cautioned that the tenure of the caretaker committees would be short-lived as local government elections are imminent. He urged the officials to handle the outgoing chairmen’s compensation and benefits responsibly, emphasizing a non-violent approach and stating that such behavior does not align with his principles.
