Gov. Dauda Lawal of Zamfara has announced plans to transform the Specialist Hospital in Gusau into a University Teaching Hospital. This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Governor’s media aide, Suleiman Idris, on Friday.
Lawal made the announcement during the inauguration of the facility upgrade at the Ahmad Sani Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital in Gusau. He emphasized that upgrading the hospital would elevate it to the status of a teaching hospital for Zamfara University, improving the referral system for specialized care, increasing the healthcare workforce, and enhancing service quality for better health outcomes.
“We are here today to flag off the remodeling, upgrading, and equipping of Ahmad Sani Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital, Gusau. This project will also involve acquiring new medical equipment for the hospital,” Lawal stated. He noted that the project follows his administration’s declaration of a state of emergency in the health sector, following similar action in education.
The governor highlighted the urgent need for the project due to the significant challenges inherited by his administration. “The hospital is in a dire state despite its vital role in providing quality healthcare services to residents and visitors. Many of its structures are in disrepair, and it lacks adequate laboratory facilities, hindering essential diagnostic procedures,” he said.
Lawal outlined the project’s aims to safeguard the health and well-being of residents and healthcare providers. “It will proactively address, manage, and ultimately control the incidences of both communicable and non-communicable diseases. Our comprehensive healthcare approach will include essential medicines, preventive measures, health policy repositioning, and implementation of water sanitation and hygiene standards,” he added.
The governor detailed the components of the remodeling project, which include new constructions, expansion, and upgrading of existing structures, completion of Doctors’ Quarters, modern laboratory imaging facilities, and a complete Hospital Information Management system, among others.
