Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has expressed deep sorrow over the recent unprovoked attack on Ayati settlement in Ukum Local Government Area (LGA), where several people were reportedly killed.
Terrorist bandits struck Ayati community in Ukum LGA on Thursday night, claiming nearly 100 lives. This tragic event comes just one month after a similar attack in the same area, which led to protests, further killings, and widespread destruction of property.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, Governor Alia strongly condemned the brutal assault on unarmed and innocent citizens of Benue State. He voiced concern over the persistence of such heinous acts despite a significant security presence and ongoing dialogue sessions his administration has been conducting with stakeholders and traditional rulers to restore peace in Sankera.
Governor Alia reaffirmed his commitment to using lawful means to protect the people of Benue, particularly those in Ukum, which has recently been at the forefront of these violent attacks.
The Governor called on security forces to enhance their surveillance and ensure that vulnerable communities are adequately protected while the government awaits the findings of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families who lost loved ones in the attack, assuring them that his thoughts and prayers are with them and the entire Ukum community.
Governor Alia also emphasized that his administration will continue to explore both discreet and open strategies to ensure that Sankera returns to a path of peace and prosperity.
