Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has voiced his dismay at the prolonged silence of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) regarding the attempted detonation of an explosive device in Port Harcourt. The incident occurred during a protest allegedly calling for the extension of tenure for former local government council chairmen.
Governor Fubara expressed his frustration after swearing in Emmanuel Onengiye-ofori Frank-Fubara as the new Commissioner for Finance at the Executive Chambers of Government House in Port Harcourt on Monday. He asserted that if his supporters were involved, terrorism charges would have been swiftly imposed.
Highlighting the disparity in responses, Fubara remarked, “If it were a situation involving me or my associates, Nigeria would have been hot by now with arrests, statements, and press conferences. But because it is from the other side, nothing is heard yet.”
Governor Fubara emphasized the prolonged inaction by the police, questioning why no statement had been made weeks after the explosive attempt outside the Presidential Hotel in Port Harcourt. He suggested that the response would have been more immediate if it had involved his administration.
Fubara also stated, “This God that Rivers State has been dedicated to by our predecessors is saving and lifting us. Enemies of the state will gather, but because their gathering is not of God, they will surely scatter.”
The governor acknowledged the supportive relationship between his administration and the Rivers State House of Assembly, emphasizing its importance in maintaining effective governance. He urged the newly sworn-in Commissioner for Finance to uphold integrity, touch lives, and defend the state’s interests.
Governor Fubara concluded by assuring that his administration would continue to deliver quality development projects to advance the state and improve the quality of life for its residents. “When we leave, there should be genuine positive things that people will see and say, yes, this government meant well for the good people of Rivers State,” he said.
