Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mr. Olukayode Egbetokun has directed organizations employing Supernumerary Police (SPY) personnel to strictly adhere to the newly standardised uniforms for these officers. The directive was announced by Mr. Bala Ciroma, Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Administration and Finance, during the inauguration of the new SPY uniforms in Abuja on Tuesday.
Egbetokun emphasized the importance of uniformity and professionalism in the SPY Police force, stating, “As we relaunch these uniforms and kits, we mandate all organizations utilizing SPY Police personnel to strictly comply with the new standards. The Force Quartermaster and personnel across states will assist with registration and acquisition processes.”
He also instructed all Police Training Schools to adopt the new uniform issuance model for SPY Police personnel. This move aims to prevent unauthorized production and distribution of police uniforms, including those for SPY officers. He therefore Orders Compliance with New Standardised Uniforms for SPY Police.
The inauguration of the standardised SPY uniforms marks a significant step towards enhancing the professionalism and visibility of the officers. Egbetokun highlighted that the Nigeria Police Act 2020 (as amended) formally integrates the SPY Police as a crucial unit within the Nigeria Police Force, detailing their powers, privileges, and functions.
“The Act ensures a standardized visual identity for the SPY Police by defining their uniforms and accoutrements,” Egbetokun explained. He added that private organizations or government departments wishing to utilize SPY officers for the protection of their properties must submit an application to the IGP.
The IGP acknowledged the previous challenges faced by the SPY Unit in establishing a distinct identity due to the lack of a standardised uniform. He noted that the current force management team recognized the need to enhance the SPY Police Unit’s role in national security and protection efforts.
