The Israeli military announced on Tuesday morning that the bodies of six hostages were recovered from the Gaza Strip during an overnight operation. The corpses were found in the city of Khan Younis, located in the southern part of the coastal territory.
The families of the six men have been notified. According to reports, five of the men were between the ages of 35 and 80. Some of the victims had already been declared dead by the military, although they were alive at the time of their abduction.
Israel estimates that Hamas, the Palestinian militant organization, still holds 109 hostages, many of whom are feared to be no longer alive. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is currently working to negotiate a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict and secure the release of the remaining hostages.
On Monday, Blinken stated that Israel had accepted a U.S.-supported proposal aimed at bridging differences between Israel and Hamas. However, Hamas has yet to agree to the proposal.
On October 7, Hamas and other Palestinian militants abducted a total of 253 people from Israel into Gaza. While some hostages have been freed through prisoner exchanges, and a few were rescued by the Israeli army, these military operations have drawn international criticism for their impact on the Palestinian civilian population.
