The Jigawa State government has distributed food and non-food items to 15,755 individuals displaced by floods across 17 local government areas.
Governor Umar Namadi made the announcement on Wednesday during the inauguration of the relief distribution exercise in Kiyawa, the headquarters of Kiyawa Local Government Area. He stated that the state government, in collaboration with the Federal Government, development organizations, and philanthropists, will continue to support the disaster victims.
The governor also expressed condolences to the families of the 36 people who lost their lives and to those who suffered losses of homes and farmlands due to the floods.
Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr. Auwal Dalladi-Sankara, highlighted the prompt response of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), which had provided relief materials to the affected persons. “We also provided a second round of relief materials, and today we are distributing additional supplies to the victims living in various Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps,” he said.
He added that support would be offered using a comprehensive register compiled with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) during the flood impact assessment.
Haruna Mairiga, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, revealed that the disaster affected over 50,000 households, with 15,755 people taking refuge in 12 IDP camps across the state. The relief exercise has so far reached 1,200 displaced persons in Buji and 3,200 in Kiyawa, with plans to extend aid to the remaining IDPs.
According to Pathway News, each beneficiary received a 10kg bag of rice, millet, and maize, one carton of pasta, and a token of N20,000.
