Chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatisation and former Abia State governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has praised the Supreme Court for confirming the independence of local government areas, calling it a triumph for democracy.
In a statement on Thursday, Senator Kalu highlighted that local governments managing their own funds would lead to swift development. He also advocated for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to oversee local government elections instead of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC).
The statement reads: “The Supreme Court’s decision on local government autonomy deserves commendation for the courage and independence demonstrated by the judiciary. The Supreme Court, as a policy institution, made a decision that benefits society. While it might seem like state interference, this autonomy is a crucial step towards addressing issues like insecurity, kidnappings, and banditry.
“When local governments fully control their funds, resources flow more effectively, benefiting local areas. During my tenure as governor from 1999-2007, granting autonomy to local government chairmen significantly contributed to my administration’s success. They built roads and awarded contracts to local contractors, taking full responsibility for their areas and reducing crime to a minimum.
“I urge the Federal Government to consider having local government elections conducted by INEC instead of SIEC. This would further strengthen local government autonomy and lessen the burden on state governments. Governance at the grassroots level makes it easier to identify and hold leaders accountable.
“I appeal to the 36 state governors to accept this judgement as a victory for democracy, for themselves, and for all Nigerians. I also congratulate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Attorney General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, and the Supreme Court justices involved in this significant achievement for Nigeria. Let’s keep our hopes alive.”
