The Lagos State Government has identified over 280 property owners and occupiers in the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme, located in Eti Osa Local Government Area, who will soon be served contravention notices for allegedly encroaching on government land.
The state’s Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Yacoob Ekundayo Alebiosu, announced that these individuals will be given a seven-day ultimatum to provide legal documentation and approvals justifying their land occupation.
Following a recent inspection, Alebiosu’s team discovered over 280 properties, including completed buildings, construction sites, and undeveloped plots, that are encroaching on government-owned land.
A statement from the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Dupe Ileyemi, revealed that Alebiosu has ordered a detailed technical assessment of the scheme to determine the extent of the encroachments. The assessment found 208 properties under construction and 72 undeveloped plots.
Alebiosu urged property owners to voluntarily dismantle their structures before official contravention notices are issued. He highlighted that the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme, established in the 2000s, is divided into three sections—Parcels A, B, and C—with the current focus on Parcel B, where encroachments have been identified alongside valid certificates of occupancy.
He emphasized that the government will not tolerate illegal land occupations, referencing a similar situation in Okun Ajah, Eti Osa LGA, where enforcement actions were taken.
“This unlawful activity must end. The state government will no longer condone or accept encroachments on its properties. We are addressing issues in Okun Ajah and will take similar actions in Mayegun. Appropriate steps will follow the issuance of contravention notices,” Alebiosu warned.
Last month, the Lagos State Government served similar contravention notices to over 200 property owners in the Okun Ajah Waterfront Scheme for related violations.
