The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed the death of a driver following a collision involving two buses on the Third Mainland Bridge.
In a statement on Monday, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency’s Permanent Secretary, revealed that the accident was caused by brake failure. LASEMA responded to distress calls received at 12:16 p.m. via the 767 and 112 toll-free lines, promptly activating its Tiger Response Team from the command and control center in Alausa.
“Upon arrival at the scene at 12:36 p.m., it was discovered that two Hiace buses, with Lagos State registration numbers EKY 804 YH and LND 624 YE, were involved in the crash,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
Initial investigations revealed that brake failure and speeding caused the driver of the trailing bus to lose control, resulting in a collision with the bus ahead.
The driver of the rear bus tragically lost his life in the incident, while seven other victims sustained varying degrees of injuries.
LASAMBUS officials provided first aid to the injured, who were later transferred to the Trauma Centre in Gbagada.
The accident vehicles were successfully cleared from the road and moved to the LASTMA office in Oshodi, allowing the road to be reopened for public use.
