The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 52-year-old medical doctor, Dr. Emmanuel Ugwumba, over his alleged involvement in child trafficking and forgery.
Dr. Ugwumba, a native of Ezimo-Agu in Udenu Local Government Area, was apprehended by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad on September 28, 2024. His arrest followed the discovery of a public notice he published on September 27, 2024, regarding an abandoned child.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, investigations revealed that Dr. Ugwumba operates Chima Hospital and Maternity in Ugbaike Enugu-Ezike, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area. He claimed to be a graduate of the University of Jos.
Ndukwe stated that Dr. Ugwumba was found to be involved in child trafficking, with police rescuing one pregnant woman, a four-year-old child, and a two-year-old child, both female, in connection with the case.

Between 2017 and 2024, the suspect allegedly conspired with a staff member from the Ministry of Gender and Social Development and other individuals to facilitate the delivery of seven untraceable children from various mothers at his hospital.
Dr. Ugwumba was also found in unauthorized possession of official documents from the Ministry of Gender Affairs and other certificates from the Enugu State Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources.
On October 9, 2024, the doctor was arraigned in court and remanded at the Nigerian Correctional Custodial Centre, pending further hearings. Investigations are ongoing to bring all individuals involved to justice.
