The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed 39 cases of monkeypox across the country since the beginning of 2024.
According to the NCDC, the majority of cases have been reported in Bayelsa (16), followed by Cross River (5), Ogun (4), Lagos (4), Ondo (3), and Ebonyi (3). Despite the rising number of cases, no deaths have been recorded so far.
At a press conference held in Abuja on Thursday, NCDC Director General, Dr. Jide Idris, assured the public that the agency has intensified its efforts in coordinating and communicating with relevant stakeholders to manage the spread of the virus and prevent further transmission. “We are working closely with state governments, healthcare providers, and international partners to ensure that the situation remains under control and that we respond swiftly to any new cases,” Dr. Idris said.
The NCDC’s efforts come in the wake of the Africa Centre for Disease Control (Africa CDC) declaring monkeypox a health emergency on Wednesday, following a significant rise in confirmed cases across the continent.
As the situation continues to develop, the NCDC is urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and adhere to preventive measures. Dr. Idris emphasized the importance of good hygiene, avoiding contact with animals that could harbor the virus, and seeking medical attention if symptoms such as fever, rash, or swollen lymph nodes develop.
The NCDC continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as more information becomes available. The public is encouraged to stay informed and cooperate with health authorities to curb the spread of the disease.
