The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has called for collaboration across all sectors to ensure effective data protection. This appeal was made by the National Commissioner, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, during his keynote address at the Centre for Business Law and Policy at the University of Lagos on Friday.
Speaking at an event themed “One Year of Data Protection Act and Five Years of Regulating Data Processing in Nigeria: Prospects and Challenges,” Olatunji emphasized that data protection is a collective responsibility. He noted that every individual and organization has a crucial role in safeguarding data and fostering collaboration.
Olatunji highlighted the commission’s efforts to enhance cooperation by working with individuals and organizations to address both the gains and challenges of data protection. He stated, “Together, we can achieve a higher standard of data protection and compliance. I urge you to work with the Commission in exchanging ideas, developing policies, and exploring other areas of partnership.”
The national commissioner also stressed the importance of Nigerians, especially the youth, acquiring data protection skills to benefit from opportunities within the ecosystem. He pointed out the need for more certified experts in the field and mentioned ongoing efforts to establish data protection certification domestically in Nigeria.
Olatunji outlined the significance of data protection laws and the model adopted in Nigeria to ensure compliance, emphasizing the job prospects within the ecosystem for students.
He acknowledged the challenges to collaboration, including the need for increased awareness and education, limited resources, rapid technological advancements, balancing innovation with regulation, enforcement and compliance, and cybersecurity threats.
Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Ayodele Atsenuwa, expressed appreciation for the national commissioner’s insights. She noted that as an academic institution, Unilag recognizes data protection as an emerging ecosystem and is committed to working closely with the NDPC to design courses and develop experts and professionals in data protection.
Ogunsola also pledged that Unilag would take all necessary steps to comply with the Nigeria Data Protection Act to safeguard students’ personal data.
